The Questionnaire

She first worked in fashion with renowned houses (Dior, Ferré, Gaultier…) then in jewelry.
Driven by the requirement that make the best signatures and the passion for beautiful fabrics, Karin Sajo now uses her creative energy for her own brand: a collection of upholstery fabrics very inspired, extremely refined, meticulously made. Graphic or floral, they are real poems of drawings and colours: lagoon/storm, lilac/purple, red/crimson, black/taupe… a noble know-how. Magnificent. Karin Sajo.

Last trip, last hotel, last memorable travel experience or anecdote?
The Taj West End, a hotel made in the colonial style at the heart of Bangalore, surrounded by lush vegetation. This is absolute luxury, within a loud and vibrant town where day-in-day-out people work at putting together my creations.

What makes or breaks a hotel?
Being true to the coquette Parisian that I am – the size of the dressing room. But firstly everything rests on the quality of the staff. Lastly, there is nothing worse than anorexic or short curtains… such meager savings!

Ultimate definition of luxury?
To spend long hours barefoot in the hot sand whilst looking for shells and coral left on the beach by the sea.

A guilty indulgence?
Perfectionism. I have spent a long time trying to learn what is essential and I’m not cured yet!
As Picasso put it, “ It takes a long time to become young.”

A scent which takes your breath away?
There are so many! To name but a few, l’Iris and Pot Pourri by Santa Marie Novella, perfumes by Avant-Guerre, lastly N’aimez que moi and Nuit de Noel by Caron. On a completely different note, the smell of turpentine emanating from my father’s workshop. And for ones pallet, jams with flowers, roses, violets, jasmine… and acacia flower doughnuts.

A back handed compliment?
It’s good to receive and accept all compliments

Last thing you read before bed?
Decoration and Haute Couture by Hélène Guéné – Armand Rateau for Jeanne Lanvin an other Art Deco book. A book which is beautifully illustrated – I’m enriched by all the wonderful photographs.

Unforgivable swearword?
A Hungarian curse which turns the airwaves blue with its expression.

A question you hope we won’t ask?
What’s your favorite colour?

An addiction?
An unwavering addiction for Italy – Tuscany, Lake Como, the Amalfi coast, Venice. One of my very first memories of travel aged 5. In particular the lagoon’s water which came right up to the door at the back of our hotel. I worryingly thought that the building was floating on the sea like a raft.

Your last rant?
It’s not good for your health or for your morale, but sometimes it is necessary!

Your last helping hand?
The satin cotton and polyurethane yarn fabrics in my collection, for the young stylist Léa Peckre with which she won the First Prize in the 25th Festival de la Mode at Hyères.

Last thing you fell in love with?
18th and 19th century Porcelaine from Limoges and Sèvres whose finely painted motifs inspired my Toiles de Jouy drawings.

Favorite music at the moment?
When I’m driving in my car, everything played at full volume.

But he is also known for his civic and philanthropic endeavors and numerous recognitions and awards for his services and achievements.

Your last trip, your last hotel room, the last memorable travel experience?
I can’t remember my last trip and most of the hotels are unforgettable for the wrong reasons

What makes or breaks a hotel?
The profitability.

Your best and worst hotel experience?
Oh I have many, The best being: Checking in, being given a good room, finding everything works perfectly and checking out without a problem – then it not raining or snowing and the flights being on top. Actually, have I ever had that experience?!

The Worst: I stayed in a hotel in Rio for 5 nights, it had the slowest elevators, so I started timing the wait each time I wanted the elevator. I added up all of the time and then sent a bill to the owners for my time at my (then) consultancy rates. They did not respond to my bill, but their accountants did! They said they had undercharged me and put a debit on my credit card! I suppose it was for all the time I was renting space in the lobby waiting for the elevator….

Your ultimate definition of luxury?
Peace, quiet, pampering and everything working well.

A back-handed compliment?
Thank you for your stay, we really enjoyed having you with us. As this in translation means : You stayed in the worst room, overlooking the garbage cans, stuck between the elevators and the ice machine. You were woken up at 6am throughout your stay by the delivery men, the laundry shrunk your shirt and ripped buttons off it – but you haven’t found out, you’ve paid full price as if you were on the concierge floor, and you – you idiot – didn’t complain!!

POWER  – on the TV remote control

What’s your home page?
Now you are getting too personal

The main difference between business in Europe and the US? Who is easier to work with?
It is much more cultured in Europe – although much less efficient and straightforward. However that depends what area of Europe you are in: Bureaucracy is France is maddening, chaos in Eastern Europe drives you crazy, then there is a lack of work ethic in Southern Europe. But the USA – you will experience a complete lack of understanding of foreigners; that’s if you can get through immigration procedures!

Adrenaline-filled or relaxing holidays?
A mixture – sometimes an adrenaline thrill is needed, and following that a large Mojito is needed, sitting in the pool and a lazy soporific day…

American Airlines

Your last trip, your last hotel room, the last memorable travel experience?
”We went to Atari and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got this amazing thing, even built with some of your parts, and what do you think about funding us? Or we’ll give it to you. We just want to do it. Pay our salary, we’ll come work for you.’ And they said, ‘No! ”

What makes or breaks  a hotel?
”In most people’s vocabularies, design means veneer. It’s interior decorating. It’s the fabric of the curtains of the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service. ”

Your  ultimate definition of luxury?
”I’m the only person I know that’s lost a quarter of a billion dollars in one year…. It’s very character-building. ”

”Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations. ”

The saying that  tingles  you?
”When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. ”

A back-handed compliment?
“The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. And I don’t mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way”

” (Itunes…) It will go down in history as a turning point for the music industry. This is landmark stuff. I can’t overestimate it!”

What’s your home page?
”Yours”

And a  word for  our next guest, perhaps ?
”No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet, death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it, and that is how it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It’s life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. ”

How would you describe your way of life?

Travel is my way of life! I am on the road constantly, and I live between Paris and Chicago – and fly to Asia and the rest of Europe regularly for my projects.

A colour scheme that defines you?

My personal taste gravitates toward more subdued colours when choosing a palette for a project – but I always like to punctuate the quiet with an accent color or a graphic motif that livens up the room and makes things a little unexpected.

What kind of art or furniture do you collect?

I am very passionate about collecting mid-centure furniture. Some of my favourite designers are T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Paul Evans and Paola Buffa

How green are you?

In the hotel industry, being environmentally responsible is very much part of the credo in building new hotels. I feel I have always been green in my attitude; my expertise has been to recycle tired, obsolete hotels and give them a new lease on life.

How do you choose your fabrics?

Choosing the right fabrics for my latest hotel project is always one of the parts of my work that I most enjoy. I love beautifully crafted fabrics from Dedar, Jim Thompson, Pierre Frey, Karin Sajo and Calvin Klein.

Tell us a bit about your fashion style?

Living in Paris, the fashion capital of the world, one can’t help but to live and breathe fashion trends year round. Personally, I love chic, well-cut, elegant clothing, classic lines with flattering shapes. I am not a fashion victim, I have developed my own style, and I choose my wardrobe to go with my constantly moving life.

How do you entertain yourself?

At our new home in Chicago, my partner and I enjoy entertaining our friends (small groups of 8 to 10) over a home-cooked meal with good wines. Our open kitchen and centra island counter makes it easy to hold a conversation while preparing dinner, and still look after our guests. We are also very lucky to have a large terrace, where we can sit outside for drinks or cook up a barbecue meal in the warmer weather.

Do you have green fingers?

I live in an apartment in Paris so my gardens are the Jardin des Tuileries or Luxembourg, which are splendid. But my favourite flowers are orchids and peonies.

Your favourite museum?

Without a doubt the Musée Marmottan – a private museum in Paris that houses an exquisite collection of Monet paintings. It has the intimate atmosphere of a private home and it is as if you have your own personal viewing of the water lilies.

The SmartPhone app you can’t live without?

I would be lost without my iPad and have recently started using the iPhone 4. The apps I use are very travel-based ones – surprise surprise – Skycanner and AroundMe. For reading on long trips I like the Wall Street Journal and Vanity Fair apps.

Where do you go to savour good food?

In London it’s The Wolseley, in Paris Le Voltaire, and in New York the Monkey bar.

What are you currently reading?

Currents reads are Kitchen Chinese by Ann Mah and Parisians: An Adventure History of Paris by Graham Robb

What is on your iPod right now?

My soundtrack of the moment is jazz pianist’s Keith Jarrett latest album Jasmine, which is a collaboration with another legend Charlie Haden.
